Objectives
To support participants by providing EMDR techniques to explore their historical trauma but anchored in the present so the trauma no longer overwhelms them but is seen in the past and detached from them now.
Tools & Materials Used
- None
Outcomes
- In EMDR therapy the individual is initially helped to cultivate an inner sense of calm and psychological strength. When this is established the individual is helped to review some of the difficult things that have happened but from the perspective of an observer. This helps to create psychological distance and often leads to the development of insights as to what happened and why. The level of distress concerning the traumatic incident (s) reduces with each review. The individual is then helped to prepare for the future by envisaging future scenarios and exploring ways of coping with future issues.
